What this engineer does

Administration is judged on the absence of events, which makes it easy to underfund right up until the morning it is not. The administrators we place are screened on the unglamorous half of the job: whether they have actually restored from a backup rather than configured one, whether their patch windows happen on schedule, and whether the runbook they wrote would get a stranger through an incident.

The timezone works unusually well here. Maintenance windows that would be an overnight call-out for a US or UK team land inside a normal Indian working day, so patching, restarts and upgrades happen while someone is awake and paying attention.

Briefs we see most often

  • Patching that keeps slipping and an estate drifting out of compliance
  • Backups nobody has restored from, and no scheduled test
  • Monitoring that alerts on everything and therefore on nothing
  • User and access administration that will not survive the next audit
  • Overnight and weekend cover without paying local out-of-hours rates
  • A developer doing sysadmin work who should be writing code

All-inclusive and indicative, shown so you can compare us against a local hire. Monthly figures assume 160 hours a month and the same for the day-rate markets, so the two always reconcile. Engagements are contracted as a monthly capacity fee or a fixed-scope deliverable, with our own delivery lead accountable for the outcome — see engagement models. There is no setup fee, no recruitment fee and no management surcharge.

Questions

Hiring system administrators

How much does it cost to hire system administrators in India?
$20–28/hour all-inclusive through Skydream Digital, which is $3,200–4,480/month for a full-time engineer at 160 hours a month. That covers salary, employer costs, equipment, security tooling and management — there is no setup fee, recruitment fee or management surcharge on top. UK buyers pay £150–210/day, Australian buyers A$28–38/hour and UAE buyers AED 95–135/hour.
Linux or Windows?
Both. Most estates are a mixture, and we shortlist against whichever side carries the weight rather than placing a generalist who is weak on the half that matters.
Can they cover our nights?
Yes, and without a premium. A US overnight window is an ordinary Indian afternoon, so you get an alert handled by someone at their desk rather than someone woken up.
System administrator or DevOps engineer?
An administrator keeps a working estate working. A DevOps engineer changes how it is built and deployed. If your problem is drift, patching and backups, an administrator is the right hire and costs materially less.
What access will they need?
Named accounts under your directory, scoped to the systems in the agreement, with MFA and logging. We decline shared credentials — they make the audit trail worthless.
