What this engineer does
What our service desk agents do
A service desk agent handles the volume: access and password resets, joiners and leavers, device and software problems, and the triage that decides what is a five-minute fix and what is an incident. Done well it is the difference between an IT function that looks responsive and one that looks absent.
What separates this from a cheap outsourced first line is what sits behind it. Our agents escalate into our own L2/L3 engineers on the same shift pattern rather than handing the ticket to another company and another timezone. That matters more than it sounds: HappySignals' 2023 benchmark puts every reassignment at more than seven points of end-user satisfaction and one hour forty-six minutes of the user's working time.
Round-the-clock cover is a headcount question rather than a premium. A genuine 24/7 desk is four to five agents on a rota covering 168 hours a week, and we will quote it that way instead of pretending one person with an out-of-hours allowance is the same thing.
Briefs we see most often
- A desk that stops answering after 6pm, or at weekends
- Engineers being interrupted by password resets instead of building
- Ticket volume growing faster than the team that triages it
- Joiners and leavers handled inconsistently, with access left open
- A first line that escalates everything because it cannot resolve anything
- Follow-the-sun cover for a team spread across timezones

All-inclusive and indicative, shown so you can compare us against a local hire. Monthly figures assume 160 hours a month and the same for the day-rate markets, so the two always reconcile. Engagements are contracted as a monthly capacity fee or a fixed-scope deliverable, with our own delivery lead accountable for the outcome — see engagement models. There is no setup fee, no recruitment fee and no management surcharge.
Questions
Hiring service desk agents
- How much does it cost to hire service desk agents in India?
- $14–20/hour all-inclusive through Skydream Digital, which is $2,240–3,200/month for a full-time engineer at 160 hours a month. That covers salary, employer costs, equipment, security tooling and management — there is no setup fee, recruitment fee or management surcharge on top. UK buyers pay £105–150/day, Australian buyers A$20–28/hour and UAE buyers AED 65–95/hour.
- How many agents does 24/7 actually take?
- Four to five on a rota. A week is 168 hours and a full-time agent covers about 40 of them, so anyone quoting round-the-clock cover from one or two people is quoting an on-call pager, not a desk. We would rather lose the quote than win it on that.
- Will our users notice the desk is in India?
- Yes. Decide whether that matters before you shortlist anyone — if your users have said they want an onshore desk, buy one, because you will not win that argument on cost. What we will argue is that users react to being passed around and left waiting far more than to where the voice is from.
- Service desk agent or system administrator?
- An agent works a queue on a shift. An administrator owns an estate. If your problem is ticket volume and response times, hire agents; if it is patching, backups and drift, hire an administrator. They cost differently and the wrong one will not fix the other's problem.
- Whose ticketing system do they work in?
- Yours — Zendesk, Freshdesk, ServiceNow or Jira Service Management, under named accounts in your directory. We do not move your tickets into a system of ours, because then your history and reporting stop being yours.
